LANGUAGE ARTS CURRICULUM

GRADE  -  ONE

Composition

Objectives:

To be able to express oneself in written work.

To be able to recognize different forms of literature.

To be able to write an interesting piece of literature.

Skills:

The ability to:

Correct letter formation and spacing.

Differentiate sounds, words, and sentences.

Write original sentences.

Write informative material.

Take dictation and develop proofreading skills.

Grammar

Objectives:

To be able to be aware of proper usage of language.

To be able to be aware of proper sentence structure.

To be able to be aware of proper punctuation.

Skills:

 

The ability to:

Identify complete sentences.

Apply rules of punctuation: periods, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, quotation marks, noun/verb agreement.

Apply rules of capitalization: proper names, beginning sentences.

 

Reading

 

Objectives:

 

To be aware of the ability to recognize pictures and other context clues.

To be aware of the ability to determine main idea of a literary work.

To be aware of the ability to follow story sequence.

To be aware of the practice of finding specific information in a given work.

To be aware of interpreting author’s meaning.

To be aware of the practice of evaluating the author’s meaning.

To be aware of the ability to make sensible predictions.

To be aware of the ability to read without lip movement (not mastered by many).

To be aware of silent reading skills.

To be aware of a true sense of joy in reading.

To be aware of ability to recognize whole-part relationships (title).

 

Skills:

 

The ability to:

Develop good attitudes toward listening, reading, writing, talking.

Discriminate between similarities and differences.

Develop listening skills for beginning, medial and ending sounds.

Develop skills for following directions.

Enjoyment of speech, music, and written words.

Early use of dictionary.

Skills necessary for sharing and working within a group and independently.

 

Handwriting

 

Objectives:

 

To be able to be aware of the formation of lower and upper case letters.

To be able to be aware of the proper spacing.

To be able to be aware of punctuation marks.

To be able to be aware of formation of numerals from 1 – 100.

 

Skills:

 

The ability to:

Develop proper handling of writing tools.

Take pride in ones written work.

 

Verbal Communication

 

Objectives:

 

To be able to verbalize thoughts.

To be able to “speak” with expression.

To be able to distinguish between fact and fiction.

To be able to identify and convey humor.

To be able to project ones voice.

To be able to reach a comfortable level of speaking in front of a group.

 

Skills:

 

The ability to:

Develop a comfortable attitude toward sharing.

Respect a speaker and an audience.

Choose appropriate materials pertaining to subject.
