Drawing the George Family Picture

Eco-maps can be used in a variety of ways to provide a visual picture of an individual, a family, or some other group. It is an excellent way to see the relationships among the various elements of family, as well as to see the outside forces that might have an effect on the family. One example of an eco-map, in this case to provide a picture of the George Family, is described below.

  1. Use circles to diagram the George Family. Draw a circle in the middle of the page to start the process.
  2. Use squares to identify significant systems, agencies, or individuals to which the George Family members relate.
  3. Connect the individuals or groups being mapped to the various other systems using different types of lines as described below. Make up your own way of describing relationships and kinships.

    a. Straight bold lines indicate strong, positive connections.
    b. Broken lines indicate weak connections
    c. Bold lines with hash marks indicate strong, negative connections.
    d. Arrows indicate directions of the relationships.
