Teaching Activities for Families
Process of Collaborative Consultation (Goal-Setting)
PROCESS OF COLLABORATIVE CONSULTATION (GOAL-SETTING)
-
Families and professionals are collaborators and they are entitled to hold their own views.
Collaborators communicate in a non-critical, non-threatening, conversational, nonconfrontational tone of voice. Example of conversational tone of voice: Share with me your daily routine and schedule… Example of direct criticism tone: Karin, you have to assume responsibility for….
-
Collaborators each assume two roles, depending on the conversation:
a) consultant and consultee
b) expert and learner
Example: “You know your child best. What do you think? I have some ideas to help Charlie….”
-
Differing points of view – listen first look second talk third
-
Keep your view, but shift it mentally to find a solution/goal/workable “plan”
Make two columns
On this side – My View | On this side – Karin’s View of Professionals
-
5. Say, “That sounds like a plan.”
-
Write out the plan in “activity step” format, so the family participates in the steps.
-
Practice the plan (rehearse it), do it. Change it.
-
Have family-professional meetings that can take place anywhere – even on the phone – to keep evaluating the plan.
