8/6/07 - To Play or Not to Play: Is It Really a Question? – Special Encore Presentation! [Listen to Audio]

Does playtime have a vital role in child development? Dr. Susan Turben and Dr. Ernest Dettore, author of “To Play or Not to Play: Is It Really a Question?” will find the answer! It has become increasingly clear, through research on the brain, that children and all of us need play. Today, children have little time for unstructured play. The precious time they do have is being consumed by academic rigor, busy schedules, television, computers and extracurricular activities. Studies show that unstructured play is healthy, in fact, essential for helping children reach important social, emotional, and cognitive goals in their development. Have fun with Dr. Susan on this week’s “Friend of the Family” – it’s good for you – it’s good for your children!

10/1/07 - Play Matters – An Important Teaching Tool [Listen to Audio]

Join us as we welcomes Dr. Christine Ferguson and Dr. Ernest Dettore, co-authors of “To Play or Not to Play: Is It Really a Question?” for a brand new show on the importance of unstructured playtime with your child. Play develops curiosity, invention, persistence, problem solving and creativity in children. Dr. Susan invites Dr. Dettore and Dr. Ferguson to talk about the many simple pleasures that play brings and why parents need to take the time to have fun with their children. Play builds the kind of free-and-easy, try-it-out, do-it-yourself spirit that our future needs. With this lively, unpressured and naturalistic approach to learning, children will continue to experience opportunities to practice new skills and functions, occasions to build the imagination and alternatives to violence and despair. Call in with your questions and ideas!
