Dear Susan:  I have a 5-1/2 month baby she weights 18 lbs.  She eats solid foods three times a day plus her milk. Is she too heavy and should she be eating solids three times a day?

Christine

Dear Christine:  Thanks for writing! I am sure your baby is going to be a good eater! What does your pediatrician say? I know 18 month olds who weigh 18 lbs, but I also know genetics plays a big part in how your infant will develop and grow. Most nursing mothers don’t start solids until 5-6 months, but many bottle fed babies get cereal and fruit by a 4-1/2 – 5-1/2 months. What do you think? I’d probably cut back on the amounts you feed at each meal, and make feeding times more social and enjoyable, with fewer bites per minute! She needs all her proteins and calories, but she also needs to slow down her rate of eating, if your pediatrician agrees.

Thanks again,

Susan Turben, Ph. D.
